Nominations: cleaning

(Quick note: I'm super excited and happy to see so much interest in this exchange, thank you everyone who has participated so far!)

Nominations for the exchange will be closing on the 20th at 20:00 GMT!

Once closed, I'll be doing some cleanup of the tag set to get it ready for sign-ups.

Tags I will be cleaning:
- misspelled tags
- duplicates

I will also be reviewing the freeforms for tags which can be amalgamated/tidied and will post these for community input on the 20th/21st.

At the moment I'm leaning towards doing very minimal amalgamation/tidying, for two reasons:
1) it's easier on my end to not have to review/edit a lot of tags
2) I'd rather people have as much flexibility as possible in order to keep the exchange fun/useful

I will likely be rewording some tags slightly for the sake of organisation, for instance so all of the "[doing x] while pining" tags are together under "pining while [doing x]", and changing "A and B" to "character A and character B" (as long as the word limit will allow me).

I am unlikely to be doing any amalgamating or moving of relationship or fandom tags, unless there is a pressing need.

What I need from you:

Please comment in the below threads with any obvious mistakes or tags you've noticed/submitted which need to be cleaned up. This isn't required but will just save me some time as I go through it. I'll double check the entire set anyway, but the more eyes on it the better!

If the tag cleanup is done quickly enough I may open sign-ups early, so everyone can start planning and requesting! :D

In "They Couldn't Possibly Be Ignorant Of How I Feel So I Assume They Not Must Be Interested", the Not and the Must should be the other way around.

I nominated the former and wouldn't mind it being combined with the latter. :D I just chose canonicals from the drop-down list instead of typing because I'm lazy.

I actually think 'X while pining' or 'pining while X' tags work better; it doesn't hurt to remind everyone that it's all about the pining.

A couple of others I noticed:
Pining while having wounds tended / Pining while tending someone's wounds
Huddling For Warmth / Pining while huddled together for warmth
Pining while imprisoned/trapped together / trapped together while pining

FYI mods, I'd argue that Pining while having wounds tended / Pining while tending someone's wounds are significantly different enough to leave separate (I was planning on requesting both), but I agree that the other ones look pretty duplicative.

Uugh, I completely misread one of those tags. Yes, one is the wounded person pining and one is the caregiver pining? Sorry, strike that one!

Could we possibly split up "pining while imprisoned" and "pining while trapped together"?

I nom'd the "trapped together while pining" tag and I was thinking of scenarios like the character are trapped in a storage room / elevator etc. I feel kidnapping scenarios are a different kind of beast (and "imprisoned" kind of implies that there's an outside perpetrator or at least that the imprisonment is deliberate).

In Dragon Age (Video Games), Cullen Rutherford/Dorian Pavus (both pining) is a duplicate of Dorian Pavus/Cullen Rutherford (both pining)

Marvel Cinematic Universe has Peter Quill/Gamora and Gamora/Peter Quill. Both have Peter pining, one refers to him as Quill instead.

Here are some things that might be considered duplicates.

Some of these potential duplicates are distinguished by whether the tag applies to both/all people in the relationship (e.g. one person pining vs. both/all people mutually pining). My instinct is that this distinction would be covered by other parts of the request, since requests will distinguish between "A/B (A pining)" vs. "A/B (both pining)" and requited vs. unrequited, but I'm not sure what other people think.


A believes B is dead
Character pines for someone they think is dead

Character thinks they aren't good enough for the object of their pining
A thinks B is out of their league

Long Distance Pining
Character A Pines From Afar

Pining after breaking up
Former lovers pine for each other

Everyone thinks they're already in a relationship
Everyone Thinks They're Together - they are pining

Fake/Pretend Relationship
Fake/Pretend Relationship - Mutual Pining
Fake Dating while Pining


And maybe

Pining from Opposite Sides of a Conflict
Pining for enemy in time of war
Pining for the enemy/rival

I think there might be a distinction to be drawn between a rival, an opponent, and an enemy, but I'm not sure this is the best way to do it?

I agree with your initial thought - with these general situations I'd rather err on the side of keeping the tag fairly flexible.

"Pining for the enemy/rival" is mine, and I really don't think it should be combined with the other two. None of the enemies or rivals in my fandoms are involved in a war or the kind of conflict that has opposite sides.

I nominated A believes B is dead because I wanted to be able to request both A pining, A believes B is dead and B pining, A believes B is dead rather than just the first scenario.

I think the confusion here is that most of the tags using the A and B designations seem to have settled on Character A=person who's pining, Character B=object of affection. That doesn't make your tag wrong, per se, but it does make its structure outside the norm for this tag set. Perhaps "One character believes the other is dead," or separate tags for "A pines for B, who they think is dead" and "A believes B, who pined for them, is dead" (but more nicely phrased)?

I'm just spitballing some ideas to make it clearer, please feel free to tell me to buzz off.

FWIW: I nominated 'Opposite Sides of a Conflict' despite there being 'enemy' and 'war' tags already specifically because I was thinking of conflicts where the characters wouldn't consider themselves enemies, or it wasn't necessarily a war-scale conflict.

Not that it couldn't encompass those, but...

These are issues with my own nominations.

Cryptozoologist who keeps finding injured animals/Female vet she brings them to (C. Pining) - The tag is too long to write cryptozoologist pining so I shortened it to C, which is hopefully clear

Number Five | The Boy & Allison & Ben & Diego & Klaus & Luther & Vanya (All Pining) - would this be better as Both Pining or would that allow a writer to interpret that as only two pining?

Regarding the second one, I would interpret that as having all of them pining for each other to some degree. Did you want only one or two characters pining? If you did and since it's a long tag, you could use initials in this tag as well.

Beverly Crusher is not a character in Star Trek: Voyager. This should be under crossovers.
