Intro & FAQ
Welcome to the Pining Exchange!
This exchange is designed to explore the trope of "pining" through the creation of fanworks. The exchange will be hosted and archived on Archive Of Our Own.
What is pining?
Pining has been defined as:
"[...] when one character spends a significant portion of the story loving another character in their secret heart, but not saying anything, usually because they assume the other party isn't interested. Meanwhile, the other party is sometimes written as oblivious (sometimes to a ridiculous extent) to the pining character's feelings. (Often until they get hit by the clue bus.) Variations include both characters pining for each other while being oblivious and one character knowing all along.
For the purposes of this exchange, works should focus on the trope as broadly outlined above. This means that the plot should revolve around one character pining for another character (or characters).
Some examples of plots revolving around pining are:
- character A has unrequited feelings for character B
- character A and character B have unrequited feelings for each other, but are kept apart by a third party
- character A is mourning for character B
- character A and character B are in a relationship, but character B has unrequited feelings for character C
- character A and B have an arranged marriage; character A assumes there aren't any feelings involved but character B has fallen in love with them and has to hide it
Do the feelings have to be unrequited?
No, for the purposes of this exchange feelings can be requited. However, in this case, there must be some additional issue which means one character is pining for the other(s). You will be able to request and match on whether or not the feelings are requited or unrequited.
What do the requitedness tags mean?
These tags are to allow participants to match on whether or not the feelings in the fic are requited or not.
The choices are:
- eventually requited (this means the requitedness must be stated in the fic somewhere, either as part of the foundation ship or as a resolution to the plot)
- never requited (this means the feelings are never requited, through ignorance/dismissal of feelings/character death etc OR that they're just not requited within the fic itself)
You may choose one or both of these at the request stage.
Do the feelings have to be romantic?
Not necessarily. For instance it would be acceptable to write about a character missing their family or former teammates. The important thing is that the feelings are strong and thoroughly explored in the work.
Can I write PWP?
Yes! But keep in mind, due to the nature of the exchange, any porn-based fic must also contain a pining-based plot.
Can I use a sock account?
Yes, this is fine.
Can I write treats for this exchange?
Yes! Please do! You can write/post treats without signing up. Treats must follow the rules of the exchange.
Can I write a Pinch Hit if I haven't signed up for the exchange?
Yes, you may! Just respond to the Pinch Hit as normal to request it.
More FAQs will be added as needed.
Rules & Exchange Outline
General rules and requirements:
For the purposes of this exchange, you must create one fic of at least 1k words which should involve pining as a central plot element. Due to the required tags, fanart will not be a part of the exchange.
You may not re-use fic or WIPs you have created for a previous exchange or for any other reason. The work must be new and created for your recipient.
Works can be of any rating, up to and including Explicit.
Works should not include any recipient DNWs.
Nominations:
You may nominate up to 10 fandoms, 10 relationships per fandom and up to 10 freeform tags.
Freeform tags should be in the form of general tropes and prompts related to pining.
Relationships should be in the following format:
- for romantic relationships: Character A/Character B (Character A pining) OR Character A/Character B (Character B pining) OR Character A/Character B (both pining)
- for non-romantic relationships: Character A & Character B (Character A pining) OR Character A & Character B (Character B pining) OR Character A & Character B (both pining)
- for multiple relationships: Character A & Character B & Character C (Character A & Character B pining) OR Character A/Character B & Character C (Character A pining) etc
NOTE: please use either (Character [A/B/C] pining) OR ([both/all] pining) and not (either pining), as it will not be acceptable for matching!
Crossovers, RPF and Original Works nominations are all acceptable.
Requests:
You may request between 3 - 10 fandoms, 1 - 10 relationships per fandom, 1 - 20 freeform tags and a choice between the requitedness tags (either one or both).
You may request 'any' in any of the above categories, but keep in mind this means you are willing to receive any and all of the tags nominated. Please do not request 'any' and then DNW tags. If there's a wide range of tags you would like to request, put the most important ones in your request and add the rest within the description or your letter.
Offers:
You must offer between 3 - 10 fandoms, 1 - 10 relationships per fandom, 1 - 20 freeform tags and a choice between the requitedness tags (either one or both).
If you are happy writing for any of the requested fandoms/relationships/freeforms, select 'any' during the offering process. Do not select this unless you are happy writing for any and all of the tags requested.
You must offer at least 3 unique fandoms.
Matching:
Participants will match on: one fandom tag AND one pairing tag AND one requitedness tag AND one freeform tag.
If signups close and someone hasn't been matched with any potential recipients, I will contact them to see if there is anything they can add to their offer. If they are not willing or able to add anything, the offer will be deleted.
Defaulting and Pinch Hits:
NOTE: no extensions will be given.
If you need to default, please do so within a reasonable amount of time before the assignment deadline to allow for a Pinch Hit author to be found. If you do not default by the time the assignments are due and you have not posted a work, you will not be eligible to participate in Pining Exchange again at the discretion of the mod.
Pinch Hits will be posted to this comm. To request a Pinch Hit, reply to the post or email the mod.
Treats:
Treats must also obey the requirements of the exchange. They should be posted to the collection on AO3 and gifted to the intended recipient, or to the mod (piningmod) if it is a gift to the community.
Treats can be posted after the end of the exchange, but should be posted to the relevant collection (i.e. treats for 2019 posted to the 2019 collection).
